It’s easier than you might think to put together a gorgeous, custom-made hanging basket to decorate your porch. Here’s how.

Step 1

Choose your basket. You’ll find a variety of hanging basket options available. Some will be plastic, or wire with a coconut-fiber liner, and others may be wood or other materials woven together with a plastic liner. Select the look and size that’s right for you. One thing to keep in mind is that the larger the basket, the better it will hold moisture, so bigger baskets typically need less watering.

Tip: Baskets with coconut-fiber liners dry out faster than plastic or plastic-lined baskets.

Step 2

Fill your basket with potting mix. Don’t use regular soil or garden soil – they’re heavier and can introduce pests or disease. Most high-quality potting mixes are made from lightweight peat or coconut fiber. They do a great job at absorbing water.

Tip: Fill your basket so there’s an inch or so between the soil and the rim of the basket.

Step 3

Add your plants. Start with a “thriller” plant – that’s your main focal point or showcase plant. Using your hands or a trowel, dig a hole in your potting mix in the center of the hanging basket. Then slip the plant out of its pot. Once it’s out, gently massage and loosen the roots, especially if you see them growing tightly around the inside of the pot. Then drop your plant in the hole and push the soil back around it. Pat the soil in with your hands to reduce any air pockets. Then add your accent plants (the “fillers” around it to fill in with color and texture). Finish planting with your “spillers” – the trailing plants you place at the edges of your basket to spill over the side.

Step 4

Add fertilizer. Once you’ve filled your pot, follow the directions on the product packaging for a guide on how much to use; different fertilizers may have varying application rates. Slow-release fertilizers are ideal because, as their name suggests, they slowly release nutrients into the soil over the growing season.

Step 5

Water well. After you’ve planted your hanging basket, water well. One unique quality about potting mixes is that they can absorb several times their weight in water, but once they dry out, they repel it. So it’s helpful to water your plants a little bit, give them a chance to absorb the water, and then add more water a few minutes later. Add moisture until the potting mix feels saturated.
